SLIT vs SCIT for management of allergic disease Various European countries appear to be moving in the direction of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) as an alternative to subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). Results appear to be good when used in the treatment of asthma and rhinitis due to the common allergens (house dust mites, grass and tree pollens). Symptoms decrease following this form of intervention and with time requirement for medication decreases. It has been proposed that dendritic cells of the oral mucosa act as efficient antigen-presenting cells, resulting in the production of IL-12. This apparently directs the response towards a Th 1 profile and away from an IgE-Th 2 profile.
